ginger juice

Healthy Ginger Juice, Gnamakoudji or Tangawizi

This west African ginger juice is one of Ivory Coast popular street drink. It is called Gnamacoudji, Nyamakuji or Gnamakoudji, or Tangawizi in other places. This drink is so easy to make and very healthy and versatile. Click here for the recipe video. The juice is made with fresh root of ginger. Originally lemon juice is added to this drink for a touch of acidity. The Gnamakoudji drink can be mixed with other ingredients depending on your taste. Mint leaves, vanilla sugar, pineapple juice or hibiscus are optional addition.

The below recipe is what my maternal grandma will always make her grandkids as healthy drink to boost our immunity. This drink is in fact believed to have tremendous health benefits in several  communities. Let see below some of these benefits.

Benefits of ginger drink:

This drink is known to help reduce pain and inflammation. It also helps ease heartburn. Gnamakoudji is known to prevent and treat colds, tonsillitis and also helps reduce hair loss.

The drink is known to help with weight loss by curbing appetite and burning fat with its thermogenic effect.

Ginger drink help improve circulation and with its diuretic property helps reduce water retention.

Nonetheless in everything moderation is key, as for some people too much ginger can increase heart rate and cause heart palpitation.

How to peel ginger root:

Making this recipe is so easy but peeling fresh ginger root is the dreaded part. In my case I gave the ginger roots to my kids to peel with spoons like my mom taught me, one of the many benefits of having people around for forced labor lol.

Once the ginger is clean thoroughly with brush and rhizome removed, immerse it in water for about 10minutes. The skin will come off easily when you scrap ginger skin holding on firmly to the inside of spoon.

Knife and peeler can also be used to remove ginger skin with extreme carefulness.

So for our recipe, I am not using sugar, I am optionally substituting the sugar with fresh pineapple juice. Below is what we need:

  • Clean ginger root
  • Peeled pineapple
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • water
  • Sugar (optional)

For tool a blender and cheese cloth work great, but I am using a juicer today.

Please note that you can adjust this recipe according to your taste. It is traditionally drunk cold. I  personally do not add sugar and love drinking this with lot of ice in summer time. You can drink it warm also. This drink can be store in fridge for up to 3 days.  This sure is a popular healthy drink throughout Africa but moderation is key.
